A slate pool table can weigh anywhere from 500-1200 pounds. The weight of a pool table can be devasting to the construction and attachment of the rails. The rails are usually the most decorative and the first seen part of the pool table. Once they're damaged or broken, the table has lost a lot of it's value. The rails are replaceable, but the piece is usually extremely expensive and trying to match the original color of the frame is not always possible due to factors beyond our control, i.e. age or fading.
A table stored on it's side is also much harder and more dangerous to disassemble and move. The frame is not meant to be moved in one piece because there is nowhere to grab the table and lift while the rails are attached.
Once the rails and the slate have been removed from the frame, it then can be stored on it's side. The rails should have the pockets removed and the rails should be positioned so that the bumpers are not being pressed on by anything surrounding them. This can cause permanent dents in the rubber and will permanently damage it over time. The pockets would ideally be stored in a box, individually wrapped, or they can be stored lying flat and wrapped in a protective wrap on a moisture free flat surface.
Most tables that you see in a restaurant or bar are going to be the typical coin operated pool table. Coin operated tables, can also be referred to as "bar tables" and can need additional attention and care that a home pool table does not require. Often we use a different grade of cloth on bar tables to withstand the wear and tear it will endure. The inside of a coin operated or "bar table" will contain a few mechanisms that can become jammed or dirty and keep the table from running smoothly. The most common problem is the cue ball keeps returning in the ball return box instead of where it should at the head of the table. There could possibly be something stuck on the magnet inside that is keeping it from returning correctly.
A common problem is the colored or numbered balls return to the ball box at the end of the table where players get free games, rather then returning behind the plexi-glass door where they have to pay to get them out. Pool cue maintenance is a key factor in a successful coin operated bar table environment as well.
